Acrobat Charles Blondin, who crossed Niagara Falls on a tightrope, was born in 1824.

Operatic soprano Geraldine Farrar was born in Melrose, Massachusetts in 1882.

Poet Stephen Spender was born in London on this day in 1909.

Director Vincente Minnelli was born in Chicago on this day in 1910.

In 1973, members of the American Indian Movement (AIM) staged an occupation in Wounded Knee, South Dakota, where in 1890 Sioux Chief Big Foot was killed, along with more than 300 other Native Americans.

It's the anniversary of the 1986 assassination of Swedish prime minister Olof Palme.
