Today is the birthday of English novelist Dame Ivy Compton-Burnett (MEN AND WIVES, A CONVERSATION), born in Pinner, Middlesex in 1884.

It's the birthday in 1898 in Cambridge, Ohio of William Boyd, who as Hopalong Cassidy starred in 118 cowboy movies with horse Topper, and sidekick Gabby Hayes.

Children's author and illustrator Richard McClure Scarry was born in Boston in 1919; he wrote more than 250 books.

Australian astronomer John Gatenby Bolton was born in Sheffield, England in 1922; he discovered the first radio stars, which are galaxies that emit strong signals in radio wavelengths.

Film and theater director Tony Richardson (THE LONLINESS OF THE LONG DISTANCE RUNNER), was born on this day in 1928 in Shipley, Yorkshire.

Journalist Billy Don Moyers was born on this day in Hugo, Oklahoma in 1934; he served as Lyndon Johnson's White House Chief of Staff.

English writer Margaret Drabble (THE GATES OF IVORY, A SUMMER BIRDCAGE, THE REALMS OF GOLD) was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire in 1939.

Playwright, director David Hare (A MAP OF THE WORLD), was born on this day in St. Leonards, Sussex in 1947.

It was in the early morning hours of this day in 1968 that Senator Robert Kennedy was shot by Sirhan Bishara Sirhan after winning the California primary. He died the next day at the age of 42.
