Author Dorothy Gilman (Mrs. Polifax novels) was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey in 1923.

It's the birthday of English novelist, Nicholas Mosley, born in London in 1923.

Author George Orwell (ANIMAL FARM, 1984) was born today in Bengal, India in 1903.

Marie Curie announced the discovery of radium on this day in 1903.

Broadway director, George Abbott ("Damn Yankees," "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum"), was born today in Forestville, New York in 1913.

It was on this day in 1857 that French writer Gustave Flaubert went on trial in Paris for offences against public morality in his novel MADAME BOVARY.
