The 86th annual St. Ann's Italian Street Festival begins its week-long celebration today in Hoboken, New Jersey.

Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin landed on the Moon on this day in 1969.

In 1944 Adolf Hitler was nearly assassinated when a bomb exploded under a table at his headquarters in Rastenburg, but he was shielded from the blast by a heavy oak table.

It's the birthday of novelist Cormac McCarthy (THE ORCHARD KEEPER; ALL THE PRETTY HORSES), born in Rhode Island in 1933.

Silent-film star Theda Bara, who played the role of the vamp in more than 40 films from 1916-1919, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1890.

In 1872 on this day, Mahlon Loomis of Washington DC, was awarded a patent for the first wireless telegraph.

It's the birthday in Dewsbury, England of physician Sir Thomas Clifford Allbutt, 1836, who invented the short clinical thermometer, replacing the foot-long thermometer then in use which required 20 minutes to record a patient's temperature.

It's the birthday of Italian poet Petrarch in Arezzo, Tuscany in 1304.
