Etiquette author, Amy Vanderbilt was born today in New York City in 1908.

It's the birthday of poet, novelist Stephen Vincent Benet, remembered for his long narrative poem, "John Brown's Body," born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in 1898.

It's the birthday of Ukrainian-born microbiologist, Seiman Abraham Waksman, 1898, whose search for antibacterial substances in soil microorganisms led to the discovery of the antibiotic streptomycin, used for the treatment of tuberculosis.

It's the birthday of writer Emma Lazarus, New York City, 1849, and best known for her sonnet "The New Colossus" which is inscribed on the Statue of Liberty.

Austrian monk and botanist, Gregor Mendel, who discovered the fundamental principle of genetics, was born in Czechoslovakia in 1822.

It's the anniversary of the coming of the Pied Piper to the German town in Hamelin in 1376, where according to legend he piped the rats out of the town, and then the children as well when the town refused to pay him.
