Novelist and short story writer, Conrad Aiken was born today in Savannah, Georgia, in 1889.

The English meteorologist William Henry Dines, who invented the first instrument to measure both the velocity and direction of wind, the pressure tube anemometer, was born in London in 1855.

French short story writer and novelist Guy de Maupassant was born today in Chateau de Miromesnil, France, in 1850.

In 1850 on this date Herman Melville met Nathaniel Hawthorne at a picnic and became fast friends.

It's the birthday in 1604 in Widford, England, of John Eliot, who was known as "Apostle to the Indians."
