It was on this day in 1981 that Dr. Philip Bjork of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology discovered the skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus Rex in Haystack Butte, South Dakota. The skeleton is estimated to be some 65 million years old.

In 1978 three Americans, Ben Abruzzo, Maxie Anderson, and Larry Newman, made the first successful Atlantic crossing in a balloon, leaving Presque Isle, Maine and taking six days to reach Miserey, France.

American frontiersman Davy Crockett was born on this day in Hawkins County, Tennessee, in 1786.
