Radio astronomer and physicist Joseph H. Taylor, Jr. was born on this day in Philadelphia, in 1941. While a professor at Amherst in 1974, he and graduate student Russell Hulse, discovered the first binary pulsar, a rapidly spinning neutron star; they won the 1993 Nobel Prize for physics.

It's the birthday of Italian playwright and actor Dario Fo, born in Sangiano, Italy, in 1926.

Poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti, a co-founder of the Beat Movement and owner of San Francisco's City Lights Bookstore, was born on this day in Yonkers, New York, 1919.

It's the birthday of biochemist Adolf Butenandt, who isolated female and male sex hormones, born in Bremerhaven-Lehe, Germany, 1903.

Former New York governor Thomas E. Dewey was born on this day in Owosso, Michigan, in 1902.

It's the birthday of first baseman George Sisler, who played mostly with the St. Louis Browns and had a lifetime average of .340. He was born in Nimisila, Ohio, 1893.
