The 32-year-old writer John Kennedy Toole committed suicide on this day in 1969. He had finished his first novel, A CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES, and encouraged by an editor, spent two years revising it before becoming depressed and giving up. His mother helped get the novel published after his death and it became a bestseller, winning the 1981 Pulitzer Prize.
