Today's Reading:"Aunt Magana" by Madelyn Camrud from THIS HOUSE IS FILLED WITH CRACKS, published by New Rivers Press.
It's the birthday today of poet Cecil Day-Lewis, the father of actor Daniel Day Lewis, born in Ballintogher, County Sligo, Ireland, in 1904.
It's the anniversary of America's worst steamship disaster in 1865, when the Sultana exploded on the Mississippi River, just north of Memphis. It was heavily overloaded with about 2,300 passengers, most of whom were Union soldiers returning home after being held as prisoners of war.
It's the birthday of Ulysses S. Grant, commander-in-chief of the Union armies during the late years of the Civil War and also 18th president. He was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio, in 1822.
It's the birthday of British historian Edward Gibbon, author of the epic six volume THE HISTORY OF THE DECLINE AND FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE, born in Putney-on-Thames, England in 1737.
