It's the birthday of the first woman to be appointed poet laureate of the United States, Mona van Duyn, born in Waterloo, Iowa, 1921.

It's the birthday of children's author Eleanor Estes, best known for her series of books about a family of four children growing up in a small New England town, beginning with THE MOFFATS in 1941. She was born in West Haven, Connecticut, in 1906.

English Egyptologist Howard Carter, who discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings, was born in London on this day in 1874.

It's the birthday of the creator of PETER PAN, THE BOY WHO WOULDN'T GROW UP, James Matthew Barrie, born in Kirriemuir, Scotland, in 1860.

Confederate spy and author Belle Boyd was born on this day in Martinsburg, West Virginia, in 1844.

It's the birthday of the famous American abolitionist John Brown, born in Torrington, Connecticut, in 1800. Captured by the Confederates and hung for treason the Union troops marched into battle singing: "John Brown's body lies a-mouldering in the grave, but his soul goes marching on."
