It's the 61st birthday of painter Frank Stella, born in Malden, Massachusetts, 1936.

Alcoholics Anonymous was founded in Akron, Ohio, on this day in 1935 by a stockbroker known as "Bill W" and a heart surgeon called "Dr. Bob S."

Russian poet Andrey Andreyevich Voznesensky (" Goya," " My Achilles Heart," " Self-Portrait" ) was born on this day in Moscow, 1933.

It's the 72nd birthday of baseball great Yogi Berra (Lawrence Peter Berra), born in St. Louis, Missouri, 1925. He played in 14 World Series and is remembered for his interesting remarks including: " If people don 't want to come out to the ball park, nobody's going to stop them."

Nature writer Farley Mowat (NEVER CRY WOLF) was born on this day in Belleville, Ontario, 1921.

It's the 90th birthday of actress Katharine Hepburn (THE PHILADELPHIA STORY; THE AFRICAN QUEEN; GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER) born in Hartford, Connecticut, 1907.

Poet and painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti was born on this day in London, in 1828.

Nurse Florence Nightingale, who overhauled nursing practices and reduced hospital mortality rates from 42% to 2%, was born on this day in Florence, Italy, in 1820.
