It's the birthday of Norma Jean Baker, who became actress Marilyn Monroe (SOME LIKE IT HOT; THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH; GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES). She was born in Los Angeles in 1926.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded on this day in New York City in 1909.

It's the birthday of English playwright John van Druten (I REMEMBER MAMA; I AM A CAMERA), born in London on this day in 1901.

Comic actress and singer Molly Picon, a star in the Yiddish theatre, was born on this day in 1898 on Manhattan's Lower East Side.
