Today is the anniversary of the Battle of Midway in 1942, when US forces surprised a Japanese assault on Midway Island, northwest of Hawaii in the Pacific, and in a single day eliminated Japan's naval air superiority in the Pacific.

Today is the birthday of novelist Larry McMurtry (THE LAST PICTURE SHOW; TERMS OF ENDEARMENT; TEXASVILLE; LONESOME DOVE), born in Wichita Falls, Texas, in 1936.

It's the birthday of Beat poet and political dissident Allen Ginsberg, whose controversial 1956 poem " Howl" made him famous. He was born in Newark, New Jersey, on this day in 1926, and died in April at the age of 70.

It's the birthday of French film director Alain Resnais (HIROSHIMA MON ARMOUR) born in Vannes, France, on this day in 1922.

Physician Charles Richard Drew, who developed and refined key blood preservation techniques and introduced the concept of refrigerated mobile blood banks, was born on this day in Washington, D.C., in 1904

The classic baseball poem "Casey at the Bat," written by Ernest L. Thayer, was first published on this day in 1888 in the SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER.

It's the anniversary of the Battle of Cold Harbor during the Civil War in 1864. More than 7,000 Federal troops were killed in the first half-hour of battle.
