Paul McCartney was born in Liverpool, England, on this day in 1942. He was 13 when he was introduced to John Lennon, who asked him to join a skiffle band he was forming called the Quarrymen.

It's the birthday of novelist and short-story writer Gail Godwin (THE PERFECTIONISTS; THE SOUTHERN FAMILY; THE GOOD HUSBAND), born in Birmingham, Alabama, on this day in 1937.

Silent film star Blanche Sweet, who became a star at the age of 17 when she appeared in D.W. Griffith's film JUDITH OF BETHULIA (1913), was born on this day in Chicago, in 1896.

It's the birthday of illustrator and painter James Montgomery Flagg, who painted the famous World War I (& World War II) Uncle Sam poster. He was born in Pelham Manor, New York, in 1877.

Oil-man Henry Clay Folger, cofounder of the Folger Shakespeare Library, was born on this day in Brooklyn, in 1857.

The Battle of Waterloo took place on this day in Belgium in 1815, where Napoleon was finally defeated in a day-long, fierce and bloody battle with British and Prussian forces.

It was on this day in 1812 that Congress declared war on Great Britain, setting off the War of 1812.
