Novelist and essayist John Nichols (THE MILAGRO BEANFIELD WAR) was born on this day in Berkeley, California, in 1940.

Writer Nicholas Gage, whose book ELENI recounts the torture and execution of his mother in Greece shortly after WW II, was born on this day in Lia, Greece, in 1939.

Zoologist and writer Marston Bates, whose mosquito research lead to new methods of preventing yellow fever, was born on this day in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1906.

Writer Raymond Chandler, the creator of private detective Philip Marlowe, was born on this day in Chicago, in 1888.

It's the birthday of British aviator Sir Arthur Whitten Brown, who made the first nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean in 1919, born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1886.

It was on this day in 1829 that William A. Burt of Mount Vernon, Michigan, patented his "typographer," considered the first type writer.
