Avant-garde composer John Cage was born in Los Angeles in 1912.

Character actor Morris Carnovsky, blacklisted during the 1950s, was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1897.

A.C. Nielson, founder of the Nielson Ratings, was born in Chicago in 1897.

In 1877 Oglala Sioux Indian, Chief Crazy Horse, was killed by a soldier at Fort Robinson, Nebraska, while trying to escape.

Outlaw Jesse James, of the James Gang who robbed the Northfield, Minnesota bank in 1876, was born in Centerville, Missouri, in 1842.

In 1870 author Victor Hugo returned to Paris from the Isle of Guernsey where he had lived in exile for almost 20 years.
