Medical pioneer and surgeon Christiaan Barnard, who performed the world's first heart transplant, was born in Beaufort West, South Africa, in 1922.

German dramatist and novelist Peter Ulrich Weiss (MARAT/SADE, THE INVESTIGATION, DISCOURSE ON VIET NAM), was born in Potsdam, Germany, 1916.

Swiss botanist and molecular biology pioneer Albert Friedrich Frey-Wyssling was born in Kussnacht, Switzerland, in 1900.

The author of GONE WITH THE WIND, Margaret Mitchell, a reporter for the ATLANTA JOURNAL before she began working on her only novel, was born in Atlanta in 1900.

Theodore Dreiser's first novel, SISTER CARRIE, was published by Doubleday in 1900, but was recalled from the stores by the publisher a short time later due to what the public considered the immorality of the story.

The creator of the inkblot test, Swiss psychiatrist Hermann Rorschach, was born in Zurich in 1884.

Bram Stoker, author of the Gothic masterpiece DRACULA, was born in Dublin in 1847.

Astronomer and mathematician Edmond Halley, the first to calculate the orbit of a comet later named for him, was born near London in 1656.
