Today is the Feast Day of Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of music and musicians.

President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas on this day in 1963 as his motorcade passed through Dealey Plaza in downtown Dallas.

Composer and French horn player Gunther Schuller was born in New York City in 1925.

Actress Geraldine Page, known for her roles in the plays of Tennessee Williams, was born in Kirksville, Missouri, in 1924.

English composer, pianist and conductor Benjamin Britten was born in Lowestoft, Suffolk, in 1913.

Composer, pianist, and singer Hoagy Carmichael, whose popular standards include "Stardust" and "Georgia on My Mind," was born in Bloomington, Indiana, in 1899.

Former French president and general Charles de Gaulle was born in Lille, in 1890.

English novelist Mary Ann Evans, better known by her pen name, George Eliot (ADAM BEDE, THE MILL ON THE FLOSS, SILAS MARNER, MIDDLEMARCH), was born in Chilvers Cotton, Warwickshire, in 1819.
