American pop artist Claes Oldenburg, known for his colossal sculptures such as the 45-foot clothespin in Philadelphia and also as the creator in the early 1960s of events that came to be known as Oldenburg "happenings," where viewers were made to reexamine everyday objects. He was born in Stockholm in 1929.
Abstract-expressionist painter Jackson Pollock was born on a sheep farm in Cody, Wyoming, in 1912.
French novelist (Sidonie-Garielle) Collette, one of France's most prolific authors, was born on this day in the village of Saint-Sauveruen-Puisaye in 1873.
