It's the birthday of Pulitzer Prize wining-author Norman Mailer, who attended Harvard with plans to become an aeronautical engineer, born in Long Branch, New Jersey, in 1923. His first novel, THE NAKED AND THE DEAD, came out in 1948 when he was 25 and made him an instant celebrity.
It's the birthday of writer John O'Hara (APPOINTMENT IN SAMARRA; BUTTERFIELD 8) born in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, 1905.
Author Zane Grey, who started out as a dentist but turned to writing and published over 50 novels including RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE, was born in Zanesville, Ohio, in 1872.
