It's the birthday of explorer Sir Richard Burton, who often traveled in disguise throughout Arabia, born in Devonshire, England, 1821.

The silver-tongued orator William Jennings Bryan was born on this day in Salem, Illinois, 1860.

South African writer Sarah Gertrude Millin, author of THE DARK RIVER and GOD'S STEP-CHILDREN, was born on this day in Cape Province in 1889.

It's the birthday of jazz saxophonist Ornette Coleman, born in Fort Worth, Texas, 1930.

Philip Roth, author of GOODBYE COLUMBUS, PORTNOY'S COMPLAINT, and the trilogy ZUCKERMAN BOUND, was born on this day in Newark, New Jersey, 1930.
