It's the birthday of Irish poet and Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney, born in Castledawson, Northern Ireland, 1939.

Southern writer Eudora Welty (DELTA WEDDING; THE OPTIMIST'S DAUGHTER) was born on this day in Jackson, Mississippi, 1909.

It's the birthday of Irish novelist and playwright Samuel Beckett (WAITING FOR GODOT), born in Dublin in 1906.

British novelist John Gerard Braine (ROOM AT THE TOP) was born on this day in Bradford, England, in 1922.

It's the birthday of Thomas Jefferson, founder of the University of Virginia, chief author of the Declaration of Independence, and whose greatest achievement was probably the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, which doubled the size of the United States. He was born on his family's farm in Albermarle County, Virginia, in 1743.
