It's the birthday of writer Cynthia Ozick (THE CANNIBAL GALAXY; THE MESSIAH OF STOCKHOLM), born in New York City in 1928.

Novelist and playwright Thornton Wilder (THE BRIDGE OF SAN LUIS REY; OUR TOWN; THE SKIN OF OUR TEETH) was born on this day in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1897.

It's the birthday of Danish author Isak Dinesen, Karen Dinesen, Baroness Blixen-Finecke, in Rungsted, Denmark, 1885. She went to Africa in 1914 to run a coffee plantation, later returning to Denmark and recording her memoirs in OUT OF AFRICA.

It's the birthday of British physiologist Ernest Henry Starling, who studied fluids moving from blood vessels into tissues, born in London, in 1866.

Alexander Cartwright, who more than anyone else qualifies as the inventor of baseball, was born on this day in New York City, in 1820.
