The Champlain Valley Fair begins today in Essex Junction, Vermont. And in Blackfoot, Idaho, it's the opening day of the Eastern Idaho State Fair.

Today is the birthday of gospel singer MARION WILLIAMS, born in Miami in 1927. She grew up singing in churches and when she was 20 years old she joined up with the Ward Singers.

Singer DINAH WASHINGTON was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in 1924, known as the Queen of the Harlem Blues during the 1950s.

Jazz alto saxophonist CHARLIE 'BIRD' PARKER, was born in Kansas City, Kansas, 1920. He helped create the style known as bebop.

Writer and director PRESTON STURGES was born in Chicago in 1898. After writing several Broadway hits and film screenplays, he directed his own screenplay, The Great McGinty (1940), which was a huge success and earned him a reputation as Hollywood's most brilliant satirist.

It's the birthday of the man who invented the electric starter, CHARLES F. KETTERING, born on a farm in Loudonville, Ohio, in 1876.

English philosopher JOHN LOCKE was born on this day in Wrington, England, in 1632.
