Writer Roald Dahl, best known for his children's books including JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH, was born in Llandaff, Wales, in 1916.

Bill Monroe, the Father of Bluegrass, was born in Rosine, Kentucky in 1911.

Actress Claudette Colbert, who starred in screwball comedies of the 1930s and 40s including IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT, was born in Paris in 1903.

British novelist and playwright J.B. Priestley was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, in 1894.

Milton Hershey, who came up with his own recipe for milk chocolate and started the famous candy company, was born in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, in 1847.

Physician Walter Reed, who led a team that determined that yellow fever was spread by infected mosquitoes, was born in Belroi, Virginia, in 1851.

In 1759 British troops defeated the French on the plains of Abraham, in Quebec.

The inventor of the continuous production line, Oliver Evans, was born in near Newport, Delaware, in 1755.
