Today is the birthday of MELVIL DEWEY, inventor of the Dewey Decimal classification system for libraries, born in Adams Center, New York, in 1851.

It's the birthday of THOMAS HOPKINS GALLAUDET, born 1787 in Philadelphia, pioneer in the education of the deaf and founder of the American Asylum for Deaf-mutes at Hartford, Connecticut, in 1816, one of the main training schools for teachers of the deaf for over fifty years.
