He gave lectures to young working men in Leeds on how to succeed through hard work, and these lectures were published in book form with titles such as Self Help (1859), Character (1871), Thrift (1875), and Duty (1880). He wrote, "The spirit of self-help is the root of all genuine growth in the individual."
