The Burning Babe

by Robert Southwell

SUNDAY 12/27

Poem: & quot; The Burning Babe," by Robert Southwell (1561-1595).

It was on this date in 1831 that the brig THE BEAGLE left Devonport, England for its voyage around the world. Charles Darwin was the naturalist on board the ship—and it was during this trip that he made the observations about animal species which he later developed into his theory of evolution.

It's the birthday of German actress MARLENE DIETRICH, born Marie Magdalene von Losch in Berlin in 1901. Her first starring role as Lola-Lola, the nightclub performer in The Blue Angel (1930), made her an international success.

The ABBEY THEATRE in Dublin opened on this night in 1904, the great national theatre of Ireland.

Oscar Hammerstein and Jerome Kern's musical SHOWBOAT opened in New York City at the Ziegfield Theater in 1927.

Radio City Music Hall opened on this day in New York City in 1932, the home of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, which has been put on every Christmas since 1933.

Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.®
