Sunday Evening
Poem: Adrienne Rich, "Sunday Evening," from Collected Early Poems 1950-1970 (W.W. Norton).
It's the birthday in 1903 of South African writer, ALAN PATON, author in 1948 of Cry, the Beloved Country, and other books that introduced apartheid to readers outside of South Africa.
It's the birthday of conservationist ALDO LEOPOLD, author of A Sand County Almanac, born in the Mississippi River town of Burlington, Iowa, 1887. In 1933, after stints with the Forest Service in Arizona and other states, he wrote the book, Game Management, one of the first of its kind to explain how to manage and restore wildlife populations. His Sand County Almanac became the environmentalist's bible for a number of years.
It's the birthday of ALICE HEGAN RICE, born in Shelbyville, Kentucky, 1870, author of 20 books and several short stories, but best known for her 1901 novel, Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch, about a family facing eviction. It was based on her experiences beginning when she was 16 years old working in a Sunday school in a Louisville slum.
It's the birthday in 1864 of H. GEORGE SELFRIDGE, founder of the British store Selfridge and Company, and the man who first said "the customer is always right."
Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.®
