This Morning
Poem: Jane Kenyon, "This Morning," from Otherwise: New and Selected Poems (Graywolf Press).
The FIRST RADIO BROADCAST TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC was made on this day in New York, 1910.
It's the birthday of zoologist ROSS GRANVILLE HARRISON, 1870, Germantown, Pennsylvania, who developed the first successful animal-tissue cultures and pioneered organ transplantation techniques.
It was on this day in 1846 that President James Polk dispatched General Zachary Taylor and 4,000 troops to the Texas Border as the MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR loomed. Most of the leaders of the American Civil War fifteen years later got their military careers started in the Mexican-American War, men like Taylor, Jefferson Davis, George McClellan; and Ulysses S. Grant.
It's HORATIO ALGER'S birthday, born in Revere, Massachusetts, 1834, author of more than 100 rags-to-riches stories for and about boys, stories like The Errand Boy and Joe the Hotel Boy. His first, Ragged Dick, about a 14-year-old shoe shine boy on the streets of New York, came out in 1867.
Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.®
