Sourdough Story

by Robert W. Service

SATURDAY 1/23

Poem: "Sourdough Story," by Robert W. Service, from The Complete Poems of Robert W. Service (Dodd, Mead, 1951).

It's the birthday of the West Indian poet and playwright DEREK WALCOTT, winner of the 1992 Nobel Prize for Literature, born in Castries, Saint Lucia, in 1930.

It's the birthday of the pharmacologist GERTRUDE BELLE ELION, born in 1918 in New York, a Nobel Prize-winner for her work on drugs used to treat leukemia, autoimmune diseases, malaria, and viral herpes.

It's the birthday in 1910 of the jazz guitarist DJANGO REINHARDT, born Jean-Baptiste Reinhardt in Liberchies, Belgium.

It was on this day in 1849 that the first female doctor, ELIZABETH BLACKWELL, graduated from the Geneva Medical College at the top of her class. She founded the New York Infirmary, which was staffed entirely for women, and created a medical school for women there.

It's the birthday of the French painter ÉDOUARD MANET, born in 1832 in Paris, a painter whose work marked the transition between realism and impressionism.

Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.®
