SATURDAY 1/30

Poem: Nursery rhymes from 1784-1850: "There Was an Old Woman and What Do You Think?," "The North Wind Doth Blow," "We're All in the Dumps," and "Boys and Girls Come Out to Play," from the Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes, ed. Iona and Peter Opie.

It was on this day in 1933 that ADOLF HITLER was named Chancellor of Germany.

It's the birthday of historian BARBARA TUCHMAN, born in 1912 in New York City, author of many historical books including The Guns of August (1962), about the first months of World War I.

It's the birthday in 1882 of the 32nd President of the United States, FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT—FDR—born in Hyde Park, New York, the president who led the United States through the Great Depression and the Second World War in his four terms of office from 1933 to 1945.

It was on this day in 1815 that Congress approved the purchase of Thomas Jefferson's library to rebuild the LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, which had been burned by the British when they captured Washington, D.C. in 1814.

It was on this day in 1649 that KING CHARLES I of England was executed by the English Parliament at the end of the first English Civil War.

Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.®
