Musée Des Beaux Arts

by W. H. Auden

SUNDAY 2/21

Poem: W.H. Auden, "Musée Des Beaux Arts," from W.H. Auden: Collected Poems (Random House).

It was on this day in 1940 that the Germans broke ground for the concentration camp at AUSCHWITZ.

It's the birthday of humorist ERMA BOMBECK, born in Dayton, Ohio, 1927.

It's the birthday in Yorkshire, England of poet W.H. AUDEN, in 1907. He moved to New York just before WWII and became an American citizen and won the 1948 Pulitzer for his long poem, "The Age of Anxiety."

The WASHINGTON MONUMENT was dedicated on this date in 1885. It took 36 years to build — from 1848 to 1884 — made of granite and marble and standing 555 feet high on the Mall in the nation's capital.

It's the birthday in 1821, New York City, of publisher CHARLES SCRIBNER, who in the mid-19th century teamed up with Isaac Baker and opened the publishing house that became Charles Scribner's Sons.

Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.®
