The Sorrow of Love

by William Butler Yeats

Broadcast Date: WEDNESDAY: April 14, 1999

Poem: "The Sorrow of Love," by William Butler Yeats.

It's the anniversary of the evening in 1912 when the TITANIC struck an iceberg in the north Atlantic during its maiden voyage and began sinking.

It's the birthday of British actor and director JOHN GEILGUD, born in London in 1904. He made his debut at the Old Vic when he was seventeen years old.

Electrical engineer HAROLD BLACK, whose research on reducing amplifier distortion made possible long-distance telephone service, was born on this day in Leominster, Massachusetts, 1898.

It was on the evening of this day in 1865 that President ABRAHAM LINCOLN was shot by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theater in Washington. He was the first U.S. president to be assassinated.

It was on this day in 1818 that Noah Webster published his AMERICAN DICTIONARY OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. It contained 70,000 words and had taken 35 years to compile.

Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.®
