The DALAI LAMA, Tibet's political and spiritual leader, fled his country on this day in 1959 as the Chinese government cracked down on Tibetan efforts at independence.
It's the anniversary of the 1943 WARSAW GHETTO UPRISING, when the Nazis attacked and killed the 60,000 remaining Jews confined to a section of Warsaw. The Jews resisted using pistols and home-made weapons, but the Nazis regrouped and set fire to the ghetto block by block.
It's the anniversary of the naming of TIMES SQUARE, in New York, 1904.
It's the birthday of the British novelist, RICHARD HUGHES, born in Weybridge, England, 1900. He wrote only four novels, but each one found its mark with readers, especially A High Wind in Jamaica, published in 1929.
It's the anniversary of the FIRST BATTLE OF THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR, in 1775, in Lexington, Massachusetts.
