The Garden of Love
Poem: "The Garden of Love," from Songs of Experience, by William Blake (1757-1827).
It's the birthday in New York, 1927, of PETER MATTHIESSEN, author of short stories and novels, but best known for his travel memoir, The Snow Leopard, which won him the National Book Award in 1979.
It's the anniversary of THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY, back in 1868, when the Reno Gang held up the Jefferson, Madison, and Indianapolis train at Marshfield, Indiana.
It's the birthday in Edinburgh, Scotland, 1859, of SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE, creator of Sherlock Holmes. Doyle was a medical doctor and started writing Sherlock Holmes stories while waiting for patients-and he based Sherlock Holmes on one of his medical school professors, Dr. Joseph Bell. The first Holmes story came out in 1887, A Study in Scarlet, when Doyle was 28, and he wrote 59 more Holmes tales, including four full-length novels.
It's the birthday of the American painter, MARY CASSATT, born in Allegheny City, now a part of Pittsburgh, 1844, known for her portraits of women knitting, reading, or caring for little children, pictures done in the new Impressionistic style that she helped champion here in the States.
Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.®
