by Beth Gylys

Broadcast Date: WEDNESDAY: June 30, 1999

Poem: "The Erratic Gardener," by Beth Gylys, from Bodies That Hum (Silverfish Review Press, 1999).

It was on this day in 1971 that the Supreme Court allowed the New York Times to continue publishing the PENTAGON PAPERS, a 3,000 page top-secret history on American involvement in Indochina.

It was on this day in 1936 that Margaret Mitchell's GONE WITH THE WIND — the story of Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler — was published.

It was on this day in 1934 that Adolf Hitler eliminated many of his political opponents in what came to be known as The NIGHT OF THE LONG KNIVES. Using his elite SS troops—the Schutzstaffel—that had sworn loyalty to him alone, Hitler executed dozens of his former allies.

It's the birthday in New York, 1926, of biochemist PAUL BERG, who won the 1980 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work with recombinant-DNA.

It's LENA HORNE's birthday, born in Brooklyn, 1917.

It's the birthday in Lithuania, 1911, of poet CZESLAW MILOSZ, winner of the 1980 Nobel Prize in Poetry.

It's the birthday in Manchester, England, 1910, of WINSTON GRAHAM, prolific author of historical novels and mysteries, many of them set along the coast of Cornwall where he grew up. He's best known for his Poldark Series, a batch of novels about a late-18th century Cornwall family.

Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.®
