Story: From Alice s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll published by Dover Publications, Inc.
On this day in 1942, the movie Casablanca had its first showing, on that year s Thanksgiving Day, in New York City. The movie stars Humphrey Bogart as the war-torn city s nightclub owner Rick, Ingrid Bergman as his old flame, Paul Henreid as her husband, the underground leader.
Today is the 77th birthday of cartoonist Charles Schulz, born in St. Paul (1922). He started drawing Peanuts 49 years ago, and, at 77, still draws and inks every panel of each of his strips without assistance.
It s the birthday of French dramatist Eugene Ionesco [ee-oh-NESS-koe], born in Slatina, Romania (1909). His best-known plays are The Bald Soprano (1950) The Killer (1959) and Rhinoceros (1960).
In 1864 on this day, author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson sent his handwritten manuscript of Alice s Adventures in Wonderland (written under the name Lewis Carroll) to his friend, 12-year-old Alice Liddell, as an early Christmas present. He had first entertained Alice with the storytelling her what happens to a girl named Alice after she falls down a rabbit holeduring a picnic with her and her sisters two years earlier. Alice Liddell, 10 years old at the time, had insisted he write it all down. According to his diary, Dodgson began writing the story on November 13, in hopes of finishing it by Christmas. Evidently the book nearly wrote itself, taking him less than two weeks to complete.
