The first baseball field opened today in Brooklyn at the Union Grounds.

On this day in 1869 a group of women met in New York to form the National

Woman Suffrage Assoc. They elected Elizabeth Cady Stanton as the first president.

Short story writer, Katherine Anne Porter, was born on this day in Indian Creek, Texas in 1890.

The first regular airmail service was launched in 1918 with flights between Washington, Philadelphia, and New York.

In 1924 Congress passed the Johnston Act, restricting immigration into the United States.

The twin brothers and English filmmakers, Antony and Peter Shaffer, were born on this day in Liverpool, England in 1926.

It's the birthday of American artist, Jasper Johns, born in Augusta, Georgia in 1930.

American poet, Emily Dickinson, died on this day in Amherst, Massachusetts in 1886.
