Today is the Feast of Saint Nicholas the patron saint of children, sailors, travelers, and brides; observed by Protestant Eastern Orthodox and Catholic churches.

It's the birthday of Peter Handke (THE LEFT-HANDED WOMAN), one of the most original 20th century writers in the German language. He was born in Griffen, Austria, 1942.

It was on this day in 1921, that the Irish Free State was born when Ireland's 26 southern counties were granted independence from Britain.

Photographer Eliot Porter was born in Winnetka, Illinois, on this day in 1901.

American lyricist Ira Gershwin was born one hundred years ago today in New York City, 1896. From "Someone to Watch Over Me:" There's a somebody I'm longing to see/I hope that he turns out to be/Someone who'll watch over me.

Poet Joyce Kilmer, famous for his poem "Trees," was born on this day in New Brunswick, New Jersey, 1886.
