In Sharpsburg, Maryland, the Antietam National Battlefield Memorial Illumination takes place today in honor of the men killed in that battle in 1862.

Fifty-five years ago today American radar showed 200 planes approaching Pearl Harborobut the radar was unable to tell if it was friend or foe. At 7:55 a.m. Honolulu time, the first Japanese dive bomber opened fire. 2,330 servicemen and 100 civilians were killed.

In 1908 on this day, the Watch and Ward Society of Boston successfully prosecuted a book salesman for selling a spicy book called THREE WEEKS, leading to the term "Banned in Boston."

Expressionist painter Stuart Davis was born on this day in Philadelphia, 1894.

English novelist Joyce Cary (THE HORSE'S MOUTH) was born on this day in Londonderry, Ireland, 1888.

Writer Willa Cather (MY ANTONIA; O PIONEERS!) was born in Winchester, Virginia, on this day in 1873.

German physiologist Theodore Schwann, who founded modern histology by defining the cell as the basic unit of animal structure, was born on this day in Neuss, Prussia, 1810.

Baroque artist Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini was born in Naples on this day in 1598.
