It was on this day in 1956 that Nikita Krushcev attacked the late Russian dictator Joseph Stalin at the Communist Party Congress in Moscow, accusing him of encouraging the "cult of the individual."

Writer Anthony Burgess (A CLOCKWORK ORANGE) was born on this day in Manchester, England, 1917.

Nutritionist Adelle Davis, who claimed "you are what you eat", was born in Lizton, Indiana, in 1905.

On this day in 1904, J.M. Synge's play RIDERS TO THE SEA opened at the Irish National Theatre Society, in Dublin; the audience was so moved that they were totally silent with no applause when the curtain fell.

Spiritual leader Meher Baba, who observed total silence for the last 44 years of his life, was born on this day in Poona, India, 1894.

Operatic tenor Enrico Caruso, was born on this day in Naples, Italy, 1873.

Painter Pierre-August Renoir was born on this day in Limoges, France, in 1841.
