Street Ballad

by George Barker

Broadcast Date: MONDAY: March 22, 1999

Poem: "Street Ballad," by George Barker, from Street Ballads (Faber & Faber).

It was on this day in 1972 that the U.S. Senate passed the EQUAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT, prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex.

LASERS were patented on this day in 1960.

The Nazi's first concentration camp, DACHAU, was opened on this day in 1933, only a few weeks after Adolf Hitler became German chancellor, and a few days before he made himself dictator.

It was on this day in 1933 the PROHIBITION ENDED in America, as President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed a bill legalizing the sale and possession of beer and wine.

It's the birthday of the British writer NICHOLAS MONSARRAT, born in Liverpool, 1910, and author in 1951 of The Cruel Sea — about the trials of Captain Ericson on W.W.II British escort ships like H.M.S. Compass Rose and Saltash.

It's the birthday in 1908, Jamestown, North Dakota, of the western writer LOUIS L'AMOUR, author of over 100 westerns such as Guns of the Timberland (1955), The Burning Hills (1956), and How the West Was Won (1963).

Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.®
