It was on this day in 1918 that the German army began using BIG BERTHA, a massive new cannon that could fire shells as far as 75 miles.

It's the birthday of AKIRA KUROSAWA, the Japanese film director, born in Tokyo in 1910. His Rashomon, from 1950, was the first Japanese film to make it big in the West, winning the 1951 Venice Film Festival grand prize.

It was on this day in 1903 that the Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, took out THE PATENT ON THEIR NEW INVENTION, THE AIRPLANE.

It was on this day in 1857, in a store at Broome Street and Broadway in New York, that Elisha Otis installed THE FIRST MODERN PASSENGER ELEVATOR.

It's the birthday of FANNIE FARMER, in Boston 1857, the woman who taught America to cook around the turn of the century with The Boston Cooking School Cook Book.

Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.®
