It's painter MARK ROTHKO's birthday, born Marcus Rothkovitch, in the town of Dvinsk, Russia, 1903. The Rothko family immigrated to the US when he was 10 years old. Rothko was almost entirely self-taught as an artist.
It's WILLIAM FAULKNER'S birthday, born in New Albany, Mississippi. In the late 1920s and early '30s he fictionalized Oxford County into Yoknapatawpha County.
